Manage boards

Create, switch, rename, duplicate and delete boards, and move items between them.

A board is one canvas for one project. Use the Boards dropdown to work with more than one.

Open the Boards dropdown

Click the current board name in the bottom toolbar (bottom-left).

  • Click a board name to switch to it. Hover it to see its item count.
  • Hover a board to show Rename (pencil), Duplicate (copy icon) and Delete (trash).
  • The header has New, the package icon (Official Board Packs, see Board packs), the Shared with me icon (when signed in: invitations and boards you accepted, see Shared boards) and the archive icon (Board Archives: back up, check and publish boards, see Board Archives).

You can also switch boards from the board picker in the Files sidebar.

Create, rename and duplicate

Create a board

Open the Boards dropdown and click New. The new board (Board 2, Board 3 and so on) opens straight away.

Rename it

Hover the board, click Rename (the pencil icon), type the new name and press Enter. Press Escape to cancel.

Duplicate it

Hover the board and click Duplicate (the copy icon). The copy gets (Copy) added to its name and opens straight away. Use it to try changes without touching the original.

Create a board from the Boards dropdown, then rename it

Delete a board

Hover the board and click Delete (the trash icon). A Delete “board name”? dialog opens. It says that this removes the board and its undo history and that it can't be undone, and suggests exporting it from Board Archives first. If some media is used only on this board, it also says that media may be permanently deleted from this device.

Before you can confirm, FlashBoards checks recent background generations for the board. The delete button is disabled during the check. If the check fails, the dialog warns that unfinished results may be lost. Choose Retry check, or Delete anyway to continue without a completed check.

Click Delete board, or Cancel (or press Esc) to keep it. The Boards menu opens again afterwards, so you can delete several boards in a row. If you delete the open board, FlashBoards switches to another one.

WarningDelete is permanent

Deleting a board removes it from this browser. Media no other board or saved history uses may also be removed from this device. Export it first from Board Archives if you might need it. Your last board can't be deleted.

Deleting a board with running generations

If generations (including Describe and Transcript) are pending or running, the dialog shows their count and warns that submitted runs may finish and be charged. The button reads Delete anyway. Click Cancel to keep the board. If a new run appears when you confirm, deletion pauses and New run detected appears with the updated count. Review it and confirm again.

After you delete, a notice says what happens to each run:

  • Runs that already started may still finish and be charged. Find supported results under Background generations above the prompt box and add them to another board. Automatic checks run only while you are signed in and the tab is visible. Errors can delay them, and they eventually pause. Use Check background generations or Retry to check the existing run without generating again.
  • Describe and Transcript runs may still finish and be charged. Their text can be added to your current local board while you stay signed in to the same account and keep the tab open. This is not recovery after closing or reloading the tab; placement can still fail, so keep the original board until the run finishes when you can.
  • Runs that hadn't started yet are cancelled and aren't charged.

Boards in more than one tab

You can open FlashBoards in several browser tabs. Edits, new boards, renames and deletions sync between them, usually within about a second. Each tab keeps its own open board after a reload. Avoid editing the same item in two tabs at once: the later saved version can replace the earlier edit.

The prompt box and the active model are currently shared by all open FlashBoards tabs, so check the prompt and model before you click Generate in another tab.

If you delete a board in one tab while another tab has it open, that tab switches to another board and shows This board was deleted in another tab. Runs that were going on that board are handled as in Deleting a board with running generations.

Some storage cleanup waits until FlashBoards is open in only one tab. See Storage.

Board limits

NotePlan limits

The Free plan includes one board. Paid plans include many more. At your limit, New and Duplicate are disabled and the footer shows Upgrade →. See Plans and balance.

Imported boards have their own allowance and don't use your board slot. On the Free plan you can keep up to three imported boards: boards imported from a .refboard file or an Official Board Pack, and Local Copy boards of shared boards. Delete one to import another. Paid plans have no import limit.

Move or copy items to another board

Select the items

Select media on the canvas. The selection can include notes, drawings or a group, but needs at least one media item.

Open the context menu

Right-click a media item in the selection and choose Move to Board or Copy to Board. Both stay greyed out until you have another board.

Pick the target

Choose the board from the list.

Move takes the items off this board and places them in free space on the target, keeping their layout. Copy keeps the originals and clears AI input roles on the copies. Shared read-only boards cannot be targets.

Undoing a Move to Board updates both boards together. If the other board has newer Undo steps, undo those first. If either board changed incompatibly or the other board was deleted, the move cannot be undone; FlashBoards leaves both boards unchanged and explains why.

Storage warnings

An amber or red triangle on the board-name button means browser storage is getting full. The dropdown then shows a Check Health banner. Back up important boards, then see Storage.

For agents

A connected agent can list, switch, create and rename boards and copy items to another board with execute_board_action (listLocalBoards, activateLocalBoard, createBoard, renameBoard, copyItemsToBoard). New boards follow your plan's board limit, and deleting a board stays with you. See Manage boards.
